Veterans Benefits for Home Care

The need for personalized home care services can become a concern for military veterans and their families. The financial piece can sometimes be the biggest challenge. Some seniors who served in the U.S. military — including the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, or Coast Guard — don't realize they may be eligible for in-home personal care benefits through the Veterans Administration (VA)As an approved home care service provider of the Veterans Administration, we are able to provide care for and accept benefits from veterans throughout Hennepin, Carver, Wright, and Scott Counties in Minnesota.

Does My Loved One Qualify for Veterans Benefits?

If you or your senior loved one served in the U.S. military, they could be eligible for financial assistance to help pay for home care. Veterans may qualify for personal home care or health benefits through the VA if they meet the following criteria:

  • They served in the active military and were discharged under any condition other than dishonorable.
  • They are current or former members of the Reserves or National Guard called to active duty (more than just training) by federal order and they completed the entire period for which they were called.

How Do Veterans Benefits Work?

U.S. military veterans may be eligible for personal care benefits through the Aid and Attendance or the Community Care Network programs.

Here’s how each program works:

  • Aid and Attendance
Veterans receiving a VA pension may also qualify for additional Aid and Attendance benefits if they require assistance with daily activities, are bedridden, live in a nursing home, or have significant vision impairment. Additionally, veterans with a permanent disability that confines them to their home may be eligible for "Housebound" benefits. These supplemental benefits are typically added directly to the veteran’s monthly pension.
  • Community Care Network
  • Eligible veterans who qualify for Community Care Network (CCN) benefits may receive financial support for home health care services. Upon qualification, a dedicated care coordinator will be assigned to assess the veteran’s specific needs, determining the necessary weekly care hours. The care coordinator will also assist families in finding local caregivers. Payments for these services are made directly to the partnering care providers.

How Can Families Apply For Veterans Benefits?

Families looking to apply for home care benefits through the Veterans Administration have a couple of options. One way to get started is to complete the 10-10EZ form and mail it directly to the VA. If you would prefer to apply in person, you can visit the Hennepin County Veterans Services office for assistance. If you live outside of Hennepin County, visit your local Veterans Center and ask to speak to a someone, such as a service coordinator, social worker, discharge planner, or case manager. They can walk you through the process and help with any questions that may come up. If you have additional questions, call the VA benefits hotline and they can direct you where to go.

When you are ready to start the application, you will likely need a few documents, such as proof that you are a U.S. veteran. You might also be asked for financial or medical records. A VA service coordinator can explain exactly what you will need to provide.

When Should Seniors Apply For Veterans’ Benefits?

It is a good idea to apply for veterans home care benefits before you or your loved one actually need them. The approval process can take time, so getting the process started early helps to avoid any delays that may require you to cover the cost of in-home care out of pocket while you wait for approval.
